Berkeley County, West Virginia Sheriff's Deputies made a gruesome discovery Friday morning along Interstate 81.
Authorities say at around 8:00 AM, they were asked by the Washington County, Maryland, Sheriff's Office to look into reports from a truck driver who claimed at around 2:30 AM, he struck a deer or a human being along the highway between the 11- and 14 mile markers. Deputies found the remains of a 64-year-old pedestrian at the 12-mile marker at northbound I-81.
The driver was in Hagerstown, where his truck was towed after it became disabled after striking the pedestrian. Investigators went to speak with the operator and examine the truck.
Authorities say the identity of the deceased is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says charges of failure to render aid, and failure to report a motor vehicle accident are pending against the driver.
The operator was driving a Fedex carrier from North Carolina.
