Marvin Chapel Thrift Shop is now having a summer clearance bag sale.  Clothing, books and videos by the bag.  Many men’s suits just $5.  Backroom sale continues at 50% off.  Other items will be reduced on a weekly basis.  The hours are Friday and Saturday from 10am till 2pm.  The church is located at 5101 Woodville Road, off of Rt. 144 between New Market and Mt. The Frederick County Humane Society is offering the following activities:


The Frederick County Humane Society is the county’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets and their families.  They are located at 217 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick.



Safe Kids of Frederick County is having free checks of car seats/booster seats.  The “Keep Kids Safe” checkpoints will be at the following locations from 1pm till 4pm:

Saint Anthony Shrine in Emmitsburg will hold their yard sale and flea market on the first and third Sunday of each month, May through October.  They are located on the corner of Rt. 15 and St. Anthony Road.  If you want to reserve a spot the cost is $10.  For more information please call 240.529.2737.  Food sales are reserved for St. Anthony Parish.



State Farm and Grammy Award Winner Kelly Clarkson team up for teen driver safety.  Teens who commit to safe driving could have the chance to bring Kelly Clarkson to Frederick for a free concert this coming school year.  State Farm is teaming up with Clarkson and offering teens the opportunity to learn more about safe driving, win grant money for their school, and be one of two school in the US and Canada to win a free concert by Kelly.  To participate, high school administrators can register their school at now through October 17th.  Beginning October 18th and continuing through US National Teen Driver Safety Week, teens, their parents and community members can make commitments to safe driving – the more commitments made, the better their chances of winning a grant for their high school and/or a concert with Kelly.

Hospice of Frederick County will hold a Family Caregiver Support Group on the second and fourth Fridays of each month.  This is an informal discussion and compassionate support for those individuals dealing with caregiving issues.  This is a self-help support group where you can share your joys, hardships, blessings and coping skills with others who are going through similar experiences.  It will be held from 10am till 11:30am at their offices, 516 Trail Avenue in Frederick, Suite A.  No registration is required, there is no cost, and for more information please call 240.566.3030.



The Frederick County Health Department is offering free flu vaccination clinics by appointment for children ages 6 months-17 years.  County residents may schedule an appointment online at or call 1.877.419.3409.  They will be held at 350 Montevue Lane in Frederick.  They offer the injectible flu shot and the intranasal FluMist.  They will be held on:

Saint Anthony Shrine in Emmitsburg will hold their fall yard, food and bake sale starting at 8:30am both days.

Lansdowne Volunteer Fire Department presents their Annual Haunted House “Night of the Living Dead”.  It will be held from 7pm till 10pm each night at 140 Lavern Avenue in Lansdowne.  Tickets are $6 for 12 and older, $4 for ages 4-12 and over 65.  Children under 3 are free but not recommended.



Saturday, October 12th

Are You Man Enough?  Walk a mile in her shoes and march to end violence against women.  The Heartly House will hold their annual event that asks men to walk a mile in high heeled shoes, with registration starting at 11am and walk beginning at noon at the Carroll Creek Pavilion.  For more information please visit


Frederick Church of the Brethren will host the National Christian Choir at 7pm.  This event is free with a love offering to be collected to support the mission and ministry of the National Christian Choir.  The concert will be held in the main Sanctuary and doors will open at 6pm.



Sunday, October 13th

Union Bridge Fire Company will hold their monthly public breakfast from 7am till noon.  The cost is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children 6-12, and under 6 are free.  It will include all you can eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, hominy, puddin, potatoes, biscuits, muffins, fruit, orange juice, tea and coffee.

Wednesday, October 16th

The Lewistown United Methodist Church will hold their slippery pot pie dinner from noon till 5:45pm.  Meals will include chicken or country ham pot pie, green beans, cole slaw, applesauce, drinks and dessert.  The cost is $11 for adults, $6 for children 6-12, and $12 for carryout.  For more information please call 301.898.7888

Friday, October 18th

The Mental Health Association of Frederick County will host their 28th Annual Legislative Breakfast from 7:30am till 9am at Dutch’s Daughter.  Members of the general public are invited to join elected officials and members of Frederick’s mental health community for a talk about the Affordable Care Act.  Seating in limited and tickets must be purchased in advance.  The cost is $20 per person and includes the program and a full breakfast.  To purchase tickets, please call Virginia Horner at 301.663.0011



Saturday, October 19th

Cunningham Falls State Park will host their Spirits of the Furnace Event from 7pm till 9:30pm.  This will begin at the Visitors Center in the Manor Area.  Visitors will be led by spirited guides on a night hike to the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace.  Frequent stops will be made to hear stories from costumed characters.  After the hike, visitors will return to the Center to enjoy apple cider and s’mores by a roaring campfire.  Participants are encouraged to wear shoes appropriate for hiking, warm clothing and bring a flashlight.  Tickets are $5 per adult, $3 per child ages 7-12, and children under 6 are free.

Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro will be hosting another Community Meal from 5pm till 7pm.  Following the meal there will be an evening of fall fun for all ages from 7pm till 9pm.  This month will be a Louisiana catfish fry with French fries, coleslaw, mac and cheese and applesauce.  This event will be held in the Family Like Center.  For more information please call 301.432.8741

The Jefferson United Church of Christ will hold their all you can eat turkey, country ham and fried oyster dinner from noon till 5pm.  It will be held at the Jefferson Community Center and tickets are $16 for adults, and $7 for children 5-10.


Second Chances Garage will hold their Road Rally, Autumn Colors Tour of Frederick County.  This is a scenic drive along the by-ways of Frederick County.  Each car team will receive a guidebook with a route and clues to look for along the way.  It is not a speed contest, but a test of the team’s ability to observe their surroundings and follow directions.  Prizes are awarded to the top three teams with the most correct answers.  Registration begins at 9:30pm, and rally starts at 10am.  Cost is $25 per person, or $85 for a car of 4.  For more information, please visit or call 240.724.1919

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Adamstown will hold their 19th Annual Country Fair from 9am till 4pm.  It will be held at the Carroll Manor Fire Company’s Carnival Grounds.

Monday, October 20th thru Sunday, October 27th

The Kids Volunteer Network will be collecting hygiene products to donate to the Homeless Education Program and Frederick County Public Schools.  Children from communities all across the county will be handing out collection bags to their friends, family members and neighbors to be filled with hygiene products that are desperately needed by the over 600 homeless students expected to be enrolled this year.  For more information please email or call 240.344.4799



Sunday, October 20th thru March 30th 2014

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Kerstein Gallery will be filled with the intricate and whimsical toys that entertained American children in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.  It opens at 2:30pm and is on view thru March of next year.
