Marvin Chapel Thrift Shop is now having a summer clearance bag sale.  Clothing, books and videos by the bag.  Many men’s suits just $5.  Backroom sale continues at 50% off.  Other items will be reduced on a weekly basis.  The hours are Friday and Saturday from 10am till 2pm.  The church is located at 5101 Woodville Road, off of Rt. 144 between New Market and Mt. The Frederick County Humane Society is offering the following activities:

The Frederick County Humane Society is the county’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets and their families.  They are located at 217 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick.

 

 

Safe Kids of Frederick County is having free checks of car seats/booster seats.  The “Keep Kids Safe” checkpoints will be at the following locations from 1pm till 4pm:

Saint Anthony Shrine in Emmitsburg will hold their yard sale and flea market on the first and third Sunday of each month, May through October.  They are located on the corner of Rt. 15 and St. Anthony Road.  If you want to reserve a spot the cost is $10.  For more information please call 240.529.2737.  Food sales are reserved for St. Anthony Parish.

 

 

State Farm and Grammy Award Winner Kelly Clarkson team up for teen driver safety.  Teens who commit to safe driving could have the chance to bring Kelly Clarkson to Frederick for a free concert this coming school year.  State Farm is teaming up with Clarkson and offering teens the opportunity to learn more about safe driving, win grant money for their school, and be one of two school in the US and Canada to win a free concert by Kelly.  To participate, high school administrators can register their school at www.CelebrateMyDrive.com now through October 17th.  Beginning October 18th and continuing through US National Teen Driver Safety Week, teens, their parents and community members can make commitments to safe driving – the more commitments made, the better their chances of winning a grant for their high school and/or a concert with Kelly.

Hospice of Frederick County will hold a Family Caregiver Support Group on the second and fourth Fridays of each month.  This is an informal discussion and compassionate support for those individuals dealing with caregiving issues.  This is a self-help support group where you can share your joys, hardships, blessings and coping skills with others who are going through similar experiences.  It will be held from 10am till 11:30am at their offices, 516 Trail Avenue in Frederick, Suite A.  No registration is required, there is no cost, and for more information please call 240.566.3030.

 

 

The Frederick County Health Department is offering free flu vaccination clinics by appointment for children ages 6 months-17 years.  County residents may schedule an appointment online at www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/flu or call 1.877.419.3409.  They will be held at 350 Montevue Lane in Frederick.  They offer the injectible flu shot and the intranasal FluMist.  They will be held on:

The Frederick County Veterans Association is preparing to send holiday gift packages to Frederick County military personnel serving overseas for the 46th consecutive year.  This program is open only to Frederick County residents serving overseas during the holidays.  Donations of any amount are gladly accepted, family members submitting names do not need to make a donation.  Donations from businesses and other organizations as well as individuals fund this program.  Names and addresses must be received no later than November 15th.  Please send them to:

Frederick County Public Schools is holding online college exam preparation.  The Frederick County Virtual School provides access to a comprehensive College Exam Preparation website for currently enrolled FCPS high school students.  For one $30 registration fee, students have 24/7 access to preparation for ACT, SAT, AP and SAT 2 subject exams until June 30, 2014.  The CEP is self-paced and self-monitored, with diagnostic performance feedback.  The fall registration deadline is Wednesday, October 30th.  For more information, please visit https://education.fcps.org/flex/cepinfo

Lansdowne Volunteer Fire Department presents their Annual Haunted House “Night of the Living Dead”.  It will be held from 7pm till 10pm each night at 140 Lavern Avenue in Lansdowne.  Tickets are $6 for 12 and older, $4 for ages 4-12 and over 65.  Children under 3 are free but not recommended.

 

 

Mondays, October 14th and 28th

Monday, October 20th thru Sunday, October 27th

The Kids Volunteer Network will be collecting hygiene products to donate to the Homeless Education Program and Frederick County Public Schools.  Children from communities all across the county will be handing out collection bags to their friends, family members and neighbors to be filled with hygiene products that are desperately needed by the over 600 homeless students expected to be enrolled this year.  For more information please email Natalie@kidsvn.org or call 240.344.4799

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Kerstein Gallery will be filled with the intricate and whimsical toys that entertained American children in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.  It opens at 2:30pm and is on view thru March of next year.

 

 

Thursday, October 24th

Hood College will hold an annual fall celebration for children in the Frederick and surrounding communities from 5pm till 8pm.  Safe Harvest provides children ages 12 and under the opportunity to enjoy a safe and fun-filled evening of games, arts and crafts, and trick or treating on Hood’s campus.  Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children throughout the evening.  It will be held in the Whitaker Campus Center Commons.  For more information please contact the Hood College Chapter of Mortar Board, National Senior Honor Society at mortarboard.org@hood.edu

 

 

Friday, October 25th and Saturday, October 26th

Saturday, October 26th

Whitesell Pharmacy, in conjunction with the Frederick Police Department and DEA, will be holding a drug disposal event.  It will be held at Harry Grove Stadium from 10am till 2pm in the parking lot.  Acceptable items are prescription medications, over the counter medications, medical samples, pet medications, medicated ointments/lotions.  For more information please call Anne Marie at Whitesell Pharmacy at 301.662.4848

 

The Annual Thurmont Halloween in the Park will be held at 6pm in the Thurmont Community Park.  There will be games, a magic show, fortune teller, haunted house and a haunted hayride.  There will also be candy and free refreshments.  The admission is $2 per person with a child, and children under 5 are free.  Please also bring a canned food item for the food bank.  For more information please call Wayne Hooper at 301.418.8641

The Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club asks you to help them share the warmth this winter by donating to their annual Children’s Clothing Drive during national “Make a Difference Day”.  Lions will accept gifts of NEW seasonal clothes in the Sunset Supply Hardware parking lot at the Libertytown Shopping Center from 9am till 1pm.  All donations go to the Frederick County Public Schools Homeless Education Program for local students in need of winter apparel.  For more information please visit www.l-u-lionsclub.com

 

The Calvary United Methodist Church Men are hosting their annual Community Pancake Breakfast from 7am till 11am.  This is a free breakfast for the community.
