PSA for November 20th through November 30th



The Christmas Shop at Marvin Chapel is now open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am till 2pm, the same hours as the Thrift Shop which remains open.  The Christmas Shop is located on the lower level of the Sunday School Building which is attached to the church.  The Thrift Shop is in a separate building next to the church parking lot.  Many, many Christmas items and decorations have been donated to the church for sale.  The church is located at 5101 Woodville Road, off of Rt. 144 between New Market and Mt. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine has the following upcoming events:

v     Saturday, November 23rd – There will be a reception to view their newest traveling exhibit “The Emotional Toll of War”.  Modern day soldiers have been diagnosed with PTSD and traumatic brain injury … this exhibit takes a look at the mindset of the Civil War soldier.  Homesickness, melancholy, insanity and even suicide are just a few of the conditions that will be explored.  The reception will be from 10:30am till noon and will feature a meet and greet with Dr. Greg Lande, the author of the exhibit.  Light refreshments will also be served.

Mother Seton School will be hosting the following events:

The Frederick County Humane Society is the county’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets and their families.  They are located at 217 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick.

Hospice of Frederick County will hold a Family Caregiver Support Group on the second and fourth Fridays of each month.  This is an informal discussion and compassionate support for those individuals dealing with caregiving issues.  This is a self-help support group where you can share your joys, hardships, blessings and coping skills with others who are going through similar experiences.  It will be held from 10am till 11:30am at their offices, 516 Trail Avenue in Frederick, Suite A.  No registration is required, there is no cost, and for more information please call 240.566.3030.



Frederick County Public Schools is holding online college exam preparation.  The Frederick County Virtual School provides access to a comprehensive College Exam Preparation website for currently enrolled FCPS high school students.  For one $30 registration fee, students have 24/7 access to preparation for ACT, SAT, AP and SAT 2 subject exams until June 30, 2014.  The CEP is self-paced and self-monitored, with diagnostic performance feedback.  The fall registration deadline is Wednesday, October 30th.  For more information, please visit



Operation Christmas Child is once again bringing Christmas cheer to children who live in countries devastated by war, poverty, disease and natural disasters.  They will distribute millions of shoe box gifts put together by churches, community groups, families and individuals just like you.  These shoe boxes are filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items.  Please help brighten the life of a child in need by packing a shoe box.  Call Samaritan’s Purse at 1.800.809.3882 for more information.  You can also visit

The Independent Hose Co. will be selling Christmas trees and wreaths at 310 Baughman’s Lane.  They open Black Friday, November 29th at 9am and will be open Monday thru Friday from 10am till 8pm and at Saturday and Sunday from 9am till 8pm.  They will have premium Frasier firs, Douglas firs, and table top trees ranging in size from 3ft to 12ft.



Sunday, October 20th thru March 30th 2014

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Kerstein Gallery will be filled with the intricate and whimsical toys that entertained American children in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.  It opens at 2:30pm and is on view thru March of next year.

Saturday, November 23rd

The Pleasant Valley Ruritan Club will be holding an all you can eat pancake breakfast from 6am till 11am at the Bownsville Church of the Brethren.  There will also be ham sandwiches for sale.  The cost of tickets is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12 and children under 6 are free.


The Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy is having a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 6am till 12pm in the Good Shepherd Hall of Calvary United Methodist Church.  The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12, and 5 and under are free.  Please bring a canned or boxed food item to donate to the Mount Airy Net Food Pantry.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there from 8:30am till 11:30am so bring your camera!


Strawberry Nature Preserve in Fairfield, PA invites the public to attend a program guiding amateur photographers into acquiring once-in-a-lifetime pictures of Comet ISON.  It will be held from 1pm till 2:30pm and the comet itself is predicted to be visible around Thanksgiving Day.  For more information please call 717.642.5840 or visit



Saturday, November 23rd and Sunday, November 24th

The Kris Kringle Holiday Craft Show will be held at the Hagerstown Community College Athletic, Recreation and Community Center on Robinwood Drive.  The show will feature over 260 quality juried crafters and will be held from 9am till 5pm on Saturday, and from 9am till 4pm on Sunday.  Admission is $1 with all funds going to Hagerstown Day Nursery’s Scholarship Fund.


The 8th Annual Yuletide Artisan Market will be held in Burkittsville from 9am till 5pm on Saturday, and from noon till 4:30pm on Sunday.  This will be a gathering of local craftspersons and artists featuring all manner of items.  There will be live harp music and free admission and it will be held at the South Mountain Heritage Society on East Main Street.



Sunday, November 24th

The Woodsboro American Legion Auxiliary will hold their Christmas Bazaar from 11am till 5pm.  The legion is located on Elizabeth Street and there will be 40+ vendors on hand with items and goods for everyone.  For more information please call Allison at 910.333.4463 or Jan at 301.370.4960

Wednesday, November 27th

Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Rohrersville will hold their Community Thanksgiving Service from 7pm till 8:30pm.  There will be refreshments afterwards.  Other contributing churches are the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and St. Lukes Episcopal Church.  All are invited!



Thursday, November 28th

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Creagerstown will hold their Thanksgiving Day Feast from 11am till 4pm.  For $16 you can enjoy a homemade, family style roast turkey and country ham meal with all the trimmings.  There are located on Black’s Mill Road near Thurmont.  For more information please call 301.271.7851
