A Frederick woman is spearheading a shoe drive to benefit Soles-4-Souls, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting poverty through the distribution of shoes and clothing. "The woman hosting the collection, her name is Susan Robertson. She owns The Little Gym of Frederick," said Nicole Atnip, Soles-4-Souls spokeswoman. "She reached out to our organization after The Little Gym hosted a corporate collection last year. She had participated and collected a few hundred pairs of shoes and she actually drove them down to our main office in Tennessee, and we were giving her a tour, and she said, oh well, I can get involved in a bigger way, and we said sure. We went over the details and she had a goal to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes, and she did that in a few months," continued Atnip. So far, Robertson has collected 40,000 pairs of shoes.
Experts estimate that approximately 300 million children worldwide, almost as many as the entire U.S. population, live without shoes on their feet. Millions of these children will grow up never having had a pair of shoes, resulting in significant ramifications for their health and well-being.
Residents can bring their donations to The Little Gym of Frederick, located at 5805 Buckeystown Pike.
