Some Maryland lawmakers are hoping to give smokers an incentive to kick the habit by possibly raising the state tobacco tax again. "A recent statewide survey shows that many citizens are in support of the hike, including those in District 3A and 3B in Frederick County," said Vinnie Demarco, the President of Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative. "It really is good policy and what this poll shows, like in the whole state, voters strongly it, so what we strongly urge is for candidates from the General Assembly to support our proposal," said DeMarco.
The pending legislation would increase the cigarette tax to another dollar per pack. It's already at $2. "There has been a 40 percent drop in teen smoking over the past few years because of the past tobacco tax increases," continued DeMarco.
