Maryland State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration invite citizens to participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 26, 2013, at the Hagerstown Barrack.
This public service was started to help protect teenagers who can sometimes find an unlimited supply of drugs in their family's medicine cabinets. Second only to marijuana, prescription drugs are the second most commonly abused drug in the country.
During the last collection, local troopers accepted 1,200 pounds of prescription drugs and nationally, officials collected 371 tons. Since the event has been held, officials have accepted 2.8 million pounds (or 1,409 tons).
