Three vehicle crashes Wednesday afternoon along Interstate 70 near Mapleville Road caused a headache for drivers in that area.
State Police in Washington county say a tractor trailer operated by Kent Nixon, 59, of Linthicum, was traveling eastbound when it came upon some heavy traffic. The big rig struck a Mercury Sable in the rear, causing it to careen off the right shoulder and overturn. The Sable operated by Caterina Earle, 55, of Bethesda, ended up on the ramp from Mapleville Road to I-70.
The semi then moved into the fast lane and struck a Chrysler Town and Country in the rear. That vehicle was being operated by Dale Ehrhart, 76, of Laurel, Md.
The tractor trailer then entered into the grassy median and came to rest on top of an embankment.
Nixon, Ehrhart, and Ehrhart's wife, Karen, 78, were taken to Meritus Medical Center for treatment.
Troopers say Nixon is charged with negligent driving in connection with these crashes.
State Police say this area of I-70 near Mapleville Road was closed intermittently from 1:06 PM through 3:00 PM for removal of the vehicles. The State Highway Administration assisted with traffic control.
