Frederick County Public Schools Earth and Space Science Lab will hold the following events:

Monocacy National Battlefield will be holding the following upcoming events:

v     Monday, August 25th – They will honor the 98th Anniversary of the establishment of the National Park Service.  This year they will have a special exhibit on the evolution of the National Park Ranger uniform badge.  In addition, special programs, exhibits and children’s activities focused on the history of the National Park Service will be offered.  Kids of all ages can join the park’s Bison mascot for cake and punch from 12pm till 1pm.  All programs are free and take place at the park’s visitor center.

Frederick County Public Schools is holding online college exam preparation.  The Frederick County Virtual School provides access to a comprehensive College Exam Preparation website for currently enrolled FCPS high school students.  For one $30 registration fee, students have 24/7 access to preparation for ACT, SAT, AP and SAT 2 subject exams until June 30, 2014.  The CEP is self-paced and self-monitored, with diagnostic performance feedback.  The fall registration deadline is Wednesday, October 30th.  For more information, please visit https://education.fcps.org/flex/cepinfo

 

 

The Woodsboro Vol Fire Company is hosting all you can eat breakfasts on the first Sunday of every month.  Serving will be from 7:30am till noon.  There will also be a bingo on the first Monday of every month.  Doors open at 5pm and games start at 7pm.  These events are to help raise money for a new fire engine.  If you would like more information, please visit www.woodsborovfc.org

 

 

Marvin Chapel’s Thrift Shop now offers weekly specials.  Stop by the Shop on Fridays and Saturdays between 10am and 2pm to check out these special offerings.  Their Summer Clearance Sale is going on now with children’s clothes now $1 a bagful, and adult summer clothing drastically reduced to make room for fall items.  The Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church Thrift Shop is located at 5101 Woodville Road, north of Rt. 144 between New Market and Mt. Saint Anthony Shrine in Emmitsburg will hold their Yard Sale and Flea Market on the first and third Sunday of each month from now thru October.  They are located at the corner of US 15 and St. Anthony Road.  If you would like to set up a table, the cost is $10 and for more information please call 240.529.2737.  Lunch rights and food sales are reserved for St. Anthony Parish.

The West Frederick Farmers Market has moved their location to 800 Oak St. in the parking lot of United Healthcare in Frederick.  After almost 20 years in their previous location they have moved for better parking and more visibility.  They are a producers only market with over 20 vendors.  Hours are Saturdays from 10am till 1pm through Thanksgiving.  There are fruits and vegetables, prepared foods, beverages, plants, craft items and more.

 

 

The Seton Center, Inc. Thrift Shop at 16840 South Seton Avenue in Emmitsburg is running two specials.  Buy 1 get 1 free basket sale and 5 books for $1 (excluding specially priced publications).  All proceeds from item sales are used to support Seton Center’s programs and services for the poor.  To make the shopping experience more convenient, credit, debit and EBT cards are not accepted.  The Thrift Shop also accepts and sells small pieces of furniture.  They are open Tuesday thru Friday from 10am till 4pm, or Saturday from 10am till 3pm.  For more information, please call 301.447.6102

 

 

National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation have joined for Alex’s Million Mile Run, Walk, Ride.  They are challenging supporters everywhere to go the extra mile this September, collectively running, Walking or cycling one million miles to work toward better treatments and ultimately cures for all kids with cancer.  They are looking for ambitious individuals, as well as teams, to pledge to run/walk/ride and contribute to the one million mile goal.  For more information, or to participate, please visit www.alexsmillionmile.org

Saturday, June 21st thru October 26th

Tuesday, August 26th

This will be the latest date to register for VOS (Virtual Outside of School).  VOS is designed for students who are independent learners and have consistent access to the internet and a computer outside of school.  Online courses are the primary source of learning, and most courses are taught at the honors level.  Students are required to attend face-to-face sessions about once a month for the duration of the course.  Exams are proctored by the course teacher or an approved proctor at each school site.  This is for students currently enrolled in FCPS grades 9-12.  These courses run from September 2nd thru December 19th.  The base school will be Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School.  The cost is $50 standard/$25 reduced/$0 free base on student’s documented Free and reduced price meals status with FCPS.  Students will receive a confirmation email and directions for making electronic payment prior to the first session.  Cutoff is 2pm on August 26th.  For more information please visit https://education.fcps.org/flex/vos to download the registration packet.

 

 

Tuesday, August 26th thru Saturday, August 30th

SERRV Outlet Store will be open in New Windsor and holding their End of Summer Overstock sale.  SERRV is a non-profit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and famers worldwide.  Their sale will be taking place on the lower level of the SERRV building.  Please enter/exit through the Outlet Store on the ground floor.  Access through the lower level doors will not be permitted during this sale.  Their hours are Tuesday thru Saturday from 10am till 5pm each day.  On Friday and Saturday from noon till 4pm there will be a concession stand, live music, games and activities and a raffle with a variety or prizes.

 

 

Thursday, August 28th

Friday, August 29th

The 5th Annual Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at the Hollow Creek Golf Course in Middletown.  Registration and Continental breakfast will be held in the Sports Bar from 7:30am till 8:45am.  There will be a putting contest on the putting green starting at 8:15am.  Shot Gun start will be at 9:15am.  This event is being held rain or shine.  For more information, or to register, please visit www.sgtdavidjsmith.org Payment is required in full prior to the event.

 

 

Saturday, August 30th

The Wolfsville Ruritan Club will be serving a chicken and ham pot pie supper under the main pavilion at the Wolfsville Ruritan Community Park.  The menu features pot pie, tossed salad, fruit, pickles, roll, cake, lemonade, iced tea and coffee.  The cost for the supper is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 6-12, and under 6 will be free.  Hot dogs will be available by the quart for $5.  Proceeds will be used for park maintenance.  For additional information, please contact Sarah Spade at 301.239.2281

 

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve invites the public to join a fly casting clinic from 10am till 3pm at the Preserve.  George Hammond will help participants get to know the fly rod, entomology, fly selection, and casting techniques in the morning.  After a brown bag lunch, everyone will head up to the pond for a chance to try out their new skills at catching some fish.  Pre-registration is required for this program.  Cost is $45 for members and $55 for non-members.  For more information please call 717.642.5840 or visit www.strawberryhill.org

Monday, September 1st

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Thurmont will hold their Annual Labor Day Festival from noon till 5pm.  There will be family style fried chicken and ham dinner in an air conditioned dining room and ample parking.  There will be live music by the Home Comfort Bluegrass Band, bingo, large white elephant sale, bake sale and raffle.  Carry outs will also be available.  The cost will be $13 for adults, $6.50 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 and under are free.  For more information please call the church office at 301.447.2367 or 301.271.4099
